Over the years there has been some concern as to the safety of amalgam (metal) fillings.  An amalgam is a blend of copper, silver, tin and zinc, bound by elemental mercury. The controversy is due to claims that the exposure to the vapor and minute particles from the mercury can cause a variety of health problems.

Many people do not realize the "silver" amalgam fillings are 50% mercury. Inhaled mercury vapor is readily absorbed into the bloodstream.  Mercury vaporizes easily at room temperature, and in this state, is odorless, colorless and tasteless. The World Health Organization has concluded that dental fillings contribute more mercury to a person's body than all other sources of mercury combined. Some research has suggested that mercury is toxic in any amount.

Although there are many opinions on the use of amalgam, we have chosen as a clinic to use alternatives to this filling material; including composite (tooth-colored), porcelain, and full gold options. We encourage you to discuss these options with your dentist so you can determine which materials would work best for your situation.
